Cycling Guide
San Francisco Bay Trail

The idea for the San Francisco Bay Trail came from Bill Lockyer, then a Democratic state senator. His aim was to help people experience the history and culture of the entire Bay Area. His proposal, known as "Senate Bill 100", passed the California State Legislature in 1987. His idea was to knit together a 450-mile "ring around the bay" that would touch the shoreline as close as possible, and link 9 counties and 47 cities.

The San Francisco Bay Trail is a pleasant combination of history workshop and bicycle tourism, of cultural enjoyment and charming flora and fauna. It traverses downtown San Francisco as well as the "San Francisco National Wildlife Refuge" and leads through almost 100 parks or protected reserve lands.
